The brakes on an electric bicycle

The brakes on an electric bicycle

Accell - Sparta Admin

With an e-bike, you can effortlessly reach speeds above 20 km/h. In a busy urban environment, you often need to slow down due to traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and other traffic. Good brakes are therefore essential for your safety.  Disc brakes on an e-bike  All new SPARTA e-bikes are equipped with disc brakes. You can recognize these brakes by the disc in both the front and rear wheels of the e-bike. Disc brakes deliver reliable performance in a wide range of weather conditions, allowing you to use your e-bike safely even in the rain. In addition, disc brakes are low-maintenance and highly durable, so you can always rely on optimal braking power.  Advantages of electric bikes with disc brakes  -Excellent performance in all weather conditions: Disc brakes provide consistent braking power, regardless of the weather.  -Low wear: Disc brakes have a long lifespan and require minimal maintenance.  -Powerful braking force: Ideal for higher speeds, disc brakes ensure quick and safe stops.  Long lifespan and low wear: Disc brakes wear out more slowly than other types of brakes, resulting in a longer service life. This means less maintenance and fewer part replacements, saving both time and money.  Low maintenance: Although disc brakes may occasionally require adjustment or servicing, they are generally easy to maintain, and brake pads can be easily replaced when necessary.    Experience it yourself  Visit your nearest SPARTA-dealer to experience the benefits of disc brakes on our e-bikes for yourself. The gears on your e-bike

The gears on your e-bike

On an e-bike, you can easily reach speeds above 20 km/h. Thanks to the motor integrated into the electric bike, you experience assistance up to 25 kilometers per hour. When you’re riding at a good pace, it’s of course important to remain comfortable while cycling.  How do you do that? The right gearing helps. There are different types of gears available, so read below to find out which system best suits your rides.  Types of gears on an electric bike  There are several types of gears you can find on an e-bike. The most important ones are hub gears and continuously variable (stepless) gears. Curious about the benefits? Read on!  An electric bike with hub gears  Hub gears are very popular on electric bikes. This gearing system is located in the center of the rear wheel, housed in a cylinder that is slightly thicker than the wheel axle. Shifting is done via a twist shifter on the handlebar, and you can even change gears while standing still. This is especially handy if you forget to downshift when stopping at a traffic light.  Advantages of hub gears: Low maintenance thanks to the enclosed chain guard Ability to shift gears while stationary Simple and easy shifting  Hub gears are available with 3, 5, 7, or 8 speeds and are ideal for flat terrain. The enclosed chain guard keeps the chain clean and prevents dirty trouser legs.    An electric bike with Enviolo – a stepless gear system  A stepless gear system, such as the Enviolo hub, offers an exceptionally smooth riding experience without the usual “steps” between gears. Instead of traditional gears, this technology uses rotating balls between discs to create a seamless transition. You shift easily by turning a control on the handlebar.  Advantages of a stepless gear system:  Infinitely many gear ratios Extremely smooth shifting Low maintenance Virtually no wear due to the absence of gear teeth  Read more about the Enviolo stepless gear system here    A stepless gear system is suitable for every type of ride and offers an infinite range of gearing options. If you’re still unsure, we recommend test-riding an e-bike with a stepless gear system.    Advantages of an e-bike with stepless gearing  Infinitely many gears Super-smooth shifting Very low maintenance Minimal wear due to the absence of gear teeth  Want to experience the difference yourself?  Are you convinced that a SPARTA e-bike is the ideal partner in crime for your daily rides? Drive system for an e-bike

Drive system for an e-bike

Should you choose a belt drive or a chain for your new electric bike? Still unsure? On this page, we explain everything you need to know to make your choice. Read on to find out more!  An electric bike with belt drive  Low-maintenance and quiet rides with a belt-driven e-bike  An electric bike with a belt drive offers a low-maintenance alternative to traditional chains. A belt generally lasts longer than a chain, meaning you spend less time and money on maintenance. In addition, the problem of dirty trouser legs is a thing of the past, as a belt stays clean while riding.  Advantages of a belt-driven e-bike:  Quiet and smooth: A belt produces less noise than a chain, resulting in a quiet and smooth ride. The lower resistance also provides a comfortable pedaling experience.  Durable: Belts are more robust and have a longer lifespan, making them ideal for daily use.  Looking for a quiet, smooth, and low-maintenance e-bike? Then an electric bike with a belt drive is the perfect choice for you!  An electric bike with chain drive  A classic choice with low-maintenance options  If a belt drive isn’t your preference, an electric bike with a chain still offers many advantages. Especially with a fully enclosed chain guard, you can enjoy a low-maintenance and affordable solution. The closed chain guard protects the chain from dirt and moisture, allowing it to last longer while keeping your favorite clothes clean.  Advantages of an e-bike with a closed chain guard:  Affordable: Generally less expensive than belt drive systems.  Protected: The enclosed chain guard reduces maintenance and extends the lifespan of the chain.  Want to experience different e-bike drive systems?  Curious which drive system suits you best? Visit your nearest SPARTA-dealer. Our experts are ready to explain the different drive systems, and you can test various models yourself. A test ride is the best way to discover whether a belt or chain drive is your preference.    Plan a visit to a SPARTA-dealer.

Maintaining an electric bicycle

Maintaining an electric bicycle

A large part of your e-bike maintenance can be done by yourself  You can handle a large part of your electric bike’s maintenance yourself. By giving your e-bike a little extra attention on a regular basis, you’ll be able to enjoy it for much longer. Difficult? Not at all! There are many small things you can easily do yourself.  How to maintain your electric bike yourself  1. Check the tire pressure of your electric bike  Soft tires not only make cycling harder, they also wear out faster. Many SPARTA e-bikes are equipped with a pressure indicator on the valve that shows whether the tire pressure is correct. If there is no pressure indicator, the correct tire pressure is listed on the sidewall of the tire. That way, you’ll always know the proper tire pressure.  2. Clean your electric bike regularly  By quickly removing sand, mud, or—in winter—snow and ice, you prevent damage to components. Treat your electric bike gently: avoid using a high-pressure washer and make sure no water remains on parts after cleaning.  3. Maintenance of your chain or belt  If your bike has an exposed chain, it’s easy to access. Make sure to clean and lubricate the chain of your electric bike regularly. Proper maintenance should be done using a product that prevents rust.  If your bike has a belt drive, make sure to regularly rinse off sand and other dirt with water. Never use soap and do not spray the belt with (chain) grease. Only use a maintenance spray that is suitable for belt drives, and apply the spray only when the belt is completely dry.  Maintenance of your e-bike battery  The battery of your electric bike is, of course, extremely important—without it, you won’t benefit from the assistance your e-bike provides. By maintaining your e-bike battery properly, you extend its lifespan, allowing you to enjoy your electric bike for even longer.  That’s why it’s essential to handle your battery correctly. Read more about maintaining your e-bike battery.  Prefer to have your electric bike serviced by a SPARTA-dealer?  Of course, not all maintenance can be done yourself. Fortunately, there’s always a SPARTA store near you where you can have your bike serviced. Please note: always have your SPARTA electric bike maintained by an authorized SPARTA-dealer. They have the right expertise and materials to take proper care of your e-bike.  It’s recommended to take your electric bike to a SPARTA-dealer at least once a year for a maintenance service. They will ensure all essential components are properly checked and can often resolve any issues right away.    Find a SPARTA-dealer near you.

Change bicycle accessories in an instant  Everything you need to know about the MIK system for bike accessories  Whether you’re running errands, picking up the kids, or taking your dog along, your bike needs to handle it all. At SPARTA, we understand that you want to switch quickly and easily between different accessories, which is why our bikes are equipped with the MIK system. With this smart system, you can click the right accessory onto your luggage carrier in just a few seconds—from panniers to child seats, all without the hassle of tools.  There are two versions of the MIK system: MIK and MIK HD. Below, we briefly explain the difference.  MIK: Quick and easy switching  With MIK, you can switch between different accessories in no time. Whether you want to attach a pannier, basket, or another item, MIK makes it simple. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to switch quickly, whether you cycle through the city every day or head out on an adventure.  MIK HD: Built for heavier loads  Do you need to carry heavier loads? Then MIK HD is the solution for you. These luggage carriers are extra strong and can carry up to 27 kilograms—perfect when you need that extra bit of capacity. You’ll find MIK HD on models such as the SPARTA a-SHINE series. You can easily recognize MIK HD by the MIK HD logo on the luggage carrier.  How does the MIK system work?  The MIK system was developed to make switching bike accessories as easy as possible. It starts with the MIK luggage carrier, which comes standard on many SPARTA bikes. This carrier features special slots into which a MIK Adapter Plate can be clicked. The Adapter Plate is attached to your accessory, such as a pannier, basket, or child seat.  It works very simply: slide the Adapter Plate with the accessory into the slots on the luggage carrier and click it into place. Once the accessory is correctly positioned, you’ll hear a click, indicating it’s securely fastened. To remove the accessory, simply press the release button and lift it off. This click-and-release system allows you to switch between accessories effortlessly and without tools. It’s designed to be sturdy, safe, and user-friendly, so you can easily adapt your bike to any situation.  Combine multiple accessories with the MIK Double Decker  The MIK Double Decker is a smart addition for those who want to combine multiple MIK accessories on their bike—for example, a dog bike basket with double panniers, or a child seat combined with a backpack. Using an intermediate plate, you can easily attach an additional accessory on top of a double pannier with a MIK adapter plate.  This provides extra flexibility and storage space while cycling. The MIK Double Decker can be mounted in two ways: directly on the bridge of the panniers or 4 centimeters further back, giving you more space behind the saddle. Thanks to this system, you can easily transport multiple accessories at once—without any hassle.      Try the MIK system yourself  Curious about what the MIK system can do for you? Everything you need to know about your e-bike battery

Everything you need to know about your e-bike battery

How do I choose the right battery for my e-bike?  Choosing the right battery for your e-bike can be a challenging task, especially with the many options available today. Whether you’re an avid cyclist who covers long distances or someone who mainly uses their e-bike for short city trips, the right battery can make a world of difference in your riding experience. In this blog, we take a closer look at the various factors you should consider when choosing the perfect battery for your SPARTA e-bike. From capacity and range to charging time and lifespan, we help you make the best choice so you can enjoy every ride worry-free. Read on and discover how to select the ideal battery for your needs!  Battery options at SPARTA  SPARTA offers several battery options, starting at 400 Wh. Below are the common capacities and their estimated ranges:  400 Wh: Often included as standard when purchasing an electric bike. Suitable for shorter distances and daily city use. Ideal for rides of 40 to 70 kilometers, depending on riding conditions and the level of assistance.  500 Wh: A versatile option for both urban rides and longer distances. This battery can offer a range of 60 to 100 kilometers.  625 Wh and higher: Perfect for long tours and longer commuting distances. With these batteries, you can travel 80 to 120 kilometers or more on a full charge.  When purchasing a new or replacement e-bike battery, it’s important to consider how you plan to use your e-bike. For short rides, a 400 Wh battery is often sufficient. For longer distances, such as commuting, we recommend a 500 Wh or 625 Wh battery. This allows you to make optimal use of your e-bike’s power.    What is the range of an e-bike?  The range of an e-bike refers to the maximum distance you can travel on a single full battery charge. This is usually expressed in kilometers. The range specified by manufacturers is often an estimate under ideal conditions, but the actual distance you can ride may vary. On your e-bike display, you can always see the remaining range (how far you can still ride), allowing you to estimate how much farther you can go with the current battery capacity. This helps ensure your ride is not interrupted by an empty battery.    Read more here about the range of your e-bike.  Maintenance of the battery on your SPARTA e-bike  Proper maintenance of your SPARTA e-bike battery is essential to extend its lifespan and ensure optimal performance. Here are some tips to keep your battery in top condition:    1. Regular charging: Charge your battery regularly, even if you don’t use your e-bike daily. Try not to let the battery completely drain before recharging, as this can shorten its lifespan.    2. Storage: Store the battery in a cool, dry place if you won’t be using the e-bike for an extended period. Avoid extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, as these can damage the battery.    3. Keeping it clean: Keep the battery contact points clean and dry. Use a dry cloth to remove dust and dirt, and prevent water from coming into contact with the connectors.    4. Correct charging: Always use the charger specifically designed for your SPARTA e-bike battery. Other chargers may not be compatible and could damage the battery.    5. Temperature management: Do not charge the battery in extreme temperatures. Ideally, charge the battery at room temperature. Charging in very low or very high temperatures can negatively affect battery capacity and lifespan.    6. Periodic inspection: Have the battery and charging points inspected regularly by a professional, especially if you notice reduced performance or visible physical damage.  By following these maintenance tips, you’ll ensure your battery lasts longer and is always ready for use. A well-maintained battery not only means a longer lifespan but also consistently reliable performance, allowing you to enjoy every ride on your SPARTA e-bike without worry.  With this extra care and attention, your e-bike remains reliable and performs at its best—ride after ride.  Want to experience the difference yourself?  Are you convinced that a SPARTA e-bike is the ideal partner in crime for your daily rides? All about the technology of e-bikes

All about the technology of e-bikes

Components of an E-Bike  E-bikes have become incredibly popular in recent years. They combine the benefits of traditional cycling with the power of an electric drive, making them ideal for both commuting and recreational riding. An electric bike is packed with technology. But what exactly are we talking about when we talk about "technology"? Let's take a closer look at the technology behind these innovative bikes.  THE BASIC COMPONENTS OF AN E-BIKE  An e-bike consists of several essential components that work together to enhance the riding experience:  1. The Motor  The motor is the heart of the e-bike and can be mounted in various locations: in the front wheel, rear wheel, or in the center near the bottom bracket (mid-motor). SPARTA electric bikes feature a Bosch mid-motor. This type of motor offers optimal weight distribution and efficiency, resulting in a smooth and stable ride.  Want to learn more about the Bosch mid-motor? Then read this blog post.  2. The battery The battery powers the motor and largely determines the e-bike's range. The batteries in a SPARTA e-bike are easily removable, making them easy to charge anywhere. Batteries vary in capacity, which is expressed in watt-hours (Wh).  Want to learn more about e-bike range? Check out this blog post.  3. Drivetrain  There are two types of drivetrains on an e-bike: chain drive or belt drive. Both systems have their own advantages and disadvantages, and which one is best for you depends on your specific needs and preferences.  Chain Drive  Chain drive is the traditional and most common drivetrain for both regular bicycles and e-bikes. These electric bicycles can be divided into two categories. There are e-bikes with a chain and a closed chain case, and e-bikes with a derailleur – and therefore an open chain.  Belt Drive  Belt drive is a newer alternative to the traditional chain and is becoming increasingly popular, especially for premium e-bikes. An electric bicycle with a belt drive is low-maintenance, quieter, and very smooth because the belt offers less resistance than a chain.  Want to know which drivetrain is best for you? Read more about drivetrain types here.  4. Gears On an e-bike, you can easily reach speeds above 20 km/h. Thanks to the motor installed in the e-bike, you'll experience assistance up to 25 km/h. Once you're up to speed, it's also important to maintain a comfortable ride.  How do you do that? Read more about gears here.  E-bike brakes  Reliable brakes are essential for the safety of any bicycle, and e-bikes are no exception.  Disc brakes, especially hydraulic ones, offer superior braking power and performance in all weather conditions.  All SPARTA e-bikes are equipped with hydraulic disc brakes to provide our e-bikes with the highest quality components.  Read all about disc brakes in this blog post.  Electric bike lighting  Good lighting is crucial for visibility and safety, especially when riding at night or in bad weather. Our e-bikes are equipped with LED lighting powered directly by the e-bike battery. This provides a bright, durable, and energy-efficient light source. Are you already familiar with our innovative n:LIGHT?
